Description
INFO
Information: Built high up on a hillside near Ysternia, it is a very beautiful monastery, offering a stunning view to the endless blue.
Founder and owner of the monastery was Sister Melanthia, child of a wealthy family, who, in 1778, still young, left Crete and came to Cyclades to become a nun. She was received as a novice in the monastery of Ekatontapiliani in Paros. She was not satisfied, however, and came to the monastery of Kechrovouni in Tinos, which she also left and moved to the monastery of Kato Panaghia.
Dynamic and restless spirit, nun Melanthia started looking for the perfect place to spend her life. She found it in a ruined chapel dedicated to the “Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple”. She set goal of her life to build there a great ecclesiastical monument in honor of the monastery where she was tonsured. She named it Katapoliani and it celebrates on the 1st of September.
She managed to complete the erection of the monastery with money inherited from her wealthy parents and charities organized by herself in three trips to Constantinople. She slept in 1835 and everybody on the island, especially the people of Panormos, mourned her loss.
