INFO

Information: The Church of Taxiarches, a three-aisled basilica, is a very important ecclesiastical monument in Chora. It is estimated that it was constructed during the years of the Venetian domination.
It was the old Cathedral of Tinos, with priceless wood carved masterpieces.
Taxiarches was initially the Catholic church of Chora and Aghios Nikolaos the biggest Orthodox one. During the early years of Ottoman domination there was an exchange between the Orthodox and the Catholics, so Taxiarches has been an Orthodox church ever since.
In 1759 the need for a bigger church became imperative, as Chora was expanding. As a result, a new larger church was erected, the old one was demolished and some auxiliary buildings were constructed in the surrounding area. The church acquired priceless wood carved masterpieces, including the iconostasis, which is considered an excellent work of art of the 18th century. The inauguration of the new church took place in 1760.
From 1810 to 1833 it was the Cathedral of Tinos.
