INFO

Information:
Located at Vrissi, near the beach of Aghios Romanos, this church has a great view to the sea.The icon “Panaghia Vryssiotissa” is considered miraculous.
A great number of Catholics come here every 15th of August and on the first Sunday of May. A Divine Liturgy is celebrated every day in May and August as well as every Friday.

The Miracle of Finding
During the time when Tinos was frequently attacked by pirates, the pious Tinians used to hide precious and sacred objects in places, where the pirates could not find and steal them.
In the 17th century, the Virgin appeared in the dream of a Catholic nun and asked her to tell the priest to dig out Her icon, searching at a certain point. The next day, the nun informed the priest of the village, who sent her away, believing it’s her imagination. The nun however kept dreaming the same thing over and over again, informing the priest continually.
After a lot of thought, the priest seeked the advice of the bishop, who suggested to do as told by the nun. The next day, he went to the spot indicated, accompanied by some workers, and retrieved the icon almost immediately.
The icon was carried to Tarampados right away and prayers were sung to Virgin Mary. The following day, however, the icon was missing and was found again at the very same point where it was initially located. The villagers thought that someone had taken it away, so they brought it back to the church and locked carefully. The icon disappeared again and that kept happening for the next two days. Then, the villagers thought it was a divine command to build a church on the site where the icon was found. This is how the church of Panaghia of Vryssi was erected, with offerings by the nearby catholic villages.
The icon of Panaghia Vryssi is kept in the church of Archanghelos Gabriel in Tarampados, for safety reasons, and is returned to its original place during the holidays.

Another miracle of the icon
Many miracles are attributed to this icon. The most interesting is the following:
During the Ottoman period, in the mid 18th century, people went to the church of Panaghia of Vrissi to celebrate the Dormition, the evening before the 15th of August. After the evening prayer, some of them lit a fire, others danced and others watched the moonlight lying in the yard. The man who played the tsampouna (wind instrument) set the rhythm.

Suddenly, a human voice was heard, coming from the instrument and saying:

“Lads and girls stop dancing!
When the frigate arrives
you will all be taken slaves
and thrown in the hold”

The priest approached the instrument to understand what was going on, but the same words would be repeated again and again coming from the instrument. Indeed, a pirate ship appeared suddenly on the horizon, which later moored in Aghios Romanos. The people immediately extinguished the fires and the candles of the church and hid inside, praying for a miracle. And the miracle happened: many trees and reeds suddenly sprouted around the church. Arriving there, the pirates were unable to find the church and left empty handed.
