Piraeus Metro (Line 1) Station

Description

The building of the train station of Piraeus (former ISAP) is a work of European standards. Designed by the architect Ioannis Axelos and his brother civil engineer Miltiades Axelos. The construction of the building was at 1928-1929. The majestic, eclectic building with the large arched vault, is a creative adaptation of European standards to the Greek era. It is a metal, modular, riveted construction with the transparent housing, which is anchored by bolts to the ground. Repeated frames, connected by horizontal, net beams, ensuring rigidity by cross windshields, while retaining the transparent glasses in order to let the sun come in. On the perimeter, the station is surrounded by supporting buildings, which have a height of two floors and offer a feeling of a roofed forum.

The train station was restored before the Olympic Games of 2004. The building now has all those trim elements which, before restoration, had suffered extensive damage from neglect, pollution and vandalism.

It is undoubtedly the largest and most beautiful Railway Station in Greece.
