- The Tower of Piraeus
Description
It is the tallest building in Piraeus and the second tallest in Athens and Greece, after the Athens Tower. Although until 1968 the maximum building height was 35 meters, the military junta in 1968 paved the way of licensing the construction of high buildings between 12-28 residential floors. Then the Municipality of Piraeus started to build the ”Commercial-Naval Center of Piraeus, as the title of the building would be. The 84 meters high and 22 storey building, with total area of 30,000 square, ended up being the "sleeping giant" of the city.
The tower would be both a rival to Athens Tower, and on the other hand would symbolize the development process of Naval Piraeus, identified with the dynamics of power. Eventually the course of this building was a symbol of vanity and power decline. The construction of the tower began in 1972 by the architects I. Vikela, C. Molfessis and A.Loizo and civil engineer A. Economou and was completed in 1974. The final form was received in 1983 with the investment of external glass and metal plates, that make Piraeus visitor think, that the building is finished and into use. Actually only the ground floor to the first two floors are, for commercial use, school housing and public services.
