- The Unknown Sailor Monument (Stavros)
Description
The first monument was inaugurated by Greek statesman Eleftherios Venizelos in closeby Psitalia island on 1930. Unfortunately it was destroyed during the 2nd World War. Since then and the following decades many tried to make a monument for the Greek sailors that lost their life during their duty in sea. The monument was built during the period of the military junta. The criterion was to be close to the sea, so it could be seen by the ships coming to the port of Piraeus.
The sculptor Lazaros Lameras was chosen to create the monument and architect N. Fintikakis the surrounding area at the small bay of Aphrodite. The monument was a synthesis of a sea wave with 5 seagulls made of brass, symbolizing the 5 continents and a huge cement Cross (Stavros) next to it. The inauguration was on December 7th 1969. Unfortunately over the years it was abandoned and you can still see only the Huge Cross standing.
