Description

Kato Pyrgos is the main village of Tylliria. It is built on the northern foothills of the Troodos mountain region, at the largest and most beautiful valley of the area and along an incomparable crystal beach. The name of the village derived from “Troulli”, a small building resembling a tower (Pyrgos) located on an imposing beach hill of the area. In reality, “Troulli” was used as an observation post during the Venetian period, whereas renovation works have recently begun by the Department of Antiquities of Nicosia. The Community is part of the Nicosia District and is approximately 111 Km away from the city centre, this corresponding to almost 1 ½ hour of driving. Works for the opening of the Pyrgos - Limnitis road block have begun and upon their completion the distance from Nicosia will be decreased to almost 40-50 minutes. The distance from Pafos is also 111 km, whereas Polis Chrysochous is approximately 50 minutes away from the village.

The Community has approximately 1500 residents, whereas during the summer months several holidaymakers also stay in the village. More particularly, many tourists from both Cyprus and abroad come to Pyrgos to enjoy our crystal seawaters, the mountain and sea air, the fresh fish and the traditional hospitality of the residents. There are several modern and fully equipped hotel units such as “Pyrgos”, “Pyrgiana”, “Tylos” and “Ifigeneia” which are located along the coast and can accommodate several visitors. Moreover, during the summer months July and August, music and dancing events are held by the Community Council of Kato Pyrgos at the Square and at the Fishing Reserve.

The heart of our Community is the square of the village where an age-long oak tree stands imposingly. It is the dominating adornment and pride of our area. Planted in 1898, the tree is 110 years old, where as its height reaches 20 metres having a periphery of 425 cm.

The village is well-known for its fine climate because of which several fruit-baring trees flourish in the area. In particular, the community is famous for its peaches, lemons, oranges, mandarins and many more fruits and vegetables. It is also well-known for its figs, both the dry-salted and the fresh ones. At the same time, Pyrgos is renowned for the traditional production of charcoals, which are undoubtedly known throughout Cyprus.

What is more, there are two churches in the village. The old church is dedicated to Agia Eirini and our new church to Saints Constantinos and Eleni. The chapels of the area are dedicated to Agios Stylianos, to Panagia Galoktisti and to Prophet Elias. All of them are surrounded by a beautiful natural environment.
