Description
Information
Limassol district Archaeological Museum was established in 1948 and was housed in the city's medieval castle. After the riots of 1964, when the castle was handed over to the National Guard, the Museum remained closed for a long time. In 1972 he began the construction of the new building of the Museum, along with the adjacent complex of the provincial city's Justice Palace. The report finally re-opened in March 1975 in the new building, which still houses the Museum until today. Recently there have been alterations and extensions to the building with a view to expanding the exhibition premises. The Museum exhibited findings covering the whole of antiquity, from the 10th Millennium BC until the end of the Roman period, which come from the city and the Province of Limassol. These objects found during systematic and rescue excavations carried out in the area by the Department of Antiquities and of various foreign archaeological missions. The Museum consists of two large rectangular classrooms that are linked together with two smaller lateral. In the central part of the building created internal open courtyard, while the outer courtyard there is a shelter for several bulky stone artifacts. The tour of the Museum begins moving to the left of the entrance hall, where is the ticket office and a small museum shop and books deltariwn archeological content. The wider area of Limassol included two cities-kingdoms: the Kourion and the Amathus. The findings from the Kourion exposed in the local Museum in Episkopi, Curium while in Limassol district Archaeological Museum hosted the findings from the Amathus and the surrounding rural settlements, temples and tombs. From the rich findings derived from the Amathus stands out a group of earthen figurines, a stone column depicting the Egyptian goddess Athor and a statue of the God Bes. All these point to the strong effects of oriental elements in artistic production of Amathus.
