- Old Harbor of Mytilene
Description
The old port is in Epano Skala district, on the north side of the city and next to the castle. Today there are only rocks in the sea reminding us their once so important existence. It is of great historical and archaeological value, since it is that chich in antiquity mainly led to the economical prosperity of Mytilene.
Then called "Malo port" because of the sanctuary of Apollo Maloentos that was there and was the commercial center of Mytilene. According to unofficial reports, the bottom of the harbor paved by ancient builders not only to prevent reducing the depth from seaweed and mud accumulation but also not to anchor in this unwanted ships.
The completion of the port put the time of the Peloponnesian War, according to what Thucydides during the Apostasy of Mytilene from the Athenian Alliance in 428 BC The large (right) pier starts from the coast and there is also a breakwater and a circular tower with loopholes in all cardinal directions. From there, the guards watched and protected the pier. This tower when conquered in 1462 by the Turkish besiegers ruled the city luck because from the harbor came the weakening of the defense of the fortification. During the centuries of Ottoman rule in this place was built tower-lighthouse which lasted until the 18th century. Around the same time in a gravure of Choiseul-Gouffier, in place of marble column, depicted a tower - lighthouse marking the entrance of the harbor. There were maintenance and repair yards of ships, warehouses and workshops necessary for the naval power of the island.
