Pigi

Description

Pigi is located in the eastern part of Lesvos, 20 km from the town of Mytilene. It is built between steep cliffs, surrounded by olive groves and pine trees at an altitude of 150 m. According to the tradition, it got its name from the holy water located in the chapel of Panagia Galatousa.

Sights of the village are the three caves where the hermits St. Thimianos, St. John and St. Philip  lived as ascetics. The most remarkable is the cave of St. Thymianos that is 4 meters wide by 2.5 meters, with the homonymous chapel located inside it.

Also worth visiting are the churches of Agia Paraskevi and of Zoodochos Pigi which are located in the village square. Finally, interesting is the pine location ‘Taurus’, 2.5 km from the village.

Also, the picturesque chapel of St. Charalambos where a big festival weekend in July is annually organized is definitely worth visiting.
