Description

Petra is located in the northern part of the island, 57.4 km from the city of Mytilene. It is a village situated on a green valley by the seaside. It took its name after the large rock which is in the middle of the village with the famous church the Panagia Glikofilousa on it. The houses are built around the rock, at a 35m radius to the church of Panagia Glikofilousa.

The first church of Glikophilousa was built in 1609. On the rock 114 steps are carved and lead to the entrance of the church.

Other attractions of the village are the mansion of Vareltzidena which is unique in Lesvos, the basilica church of St. Nicholas with exceptional murals and finally the collection of Byzantine icons.
