Description

Nees Kidonies is located 23.3 km from the city of Mytilene. It is built on a plateau at an altitude of 300m. It takes its name from the refugees who came after the destruction of Mikra Asia in 1922, coming from Ayvalık, Moschonisia, Kidonies and Menemeni.

The area was baptized as Nees Kidonies from the word ayva, which in Turkish means quince. The refugees turned the old Turkish mosque into a church by adding a sanctuary and a narthex. They dedicated it to St. George the Chiopoliti - martyr of Ayvalık (November 26, 1807).

The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. The port area is called Skala Neon Kidonion and has a very picturesque harbor. There is a sandy beach and several taverns with rich dishes and fresh seafood during the summer.
