Mithymna (Molyvos) is a large village located in the north of Lesvos, 62km from Mytilene. The name of the ancient city is pre-Hellenic and the word means respected (or/and protected). The traditional village was built during the Byzantine period.
The houses are built on stone paths. Most houses have two floors, built of stone and wood.
Sights of the village include the Byzantine castle, the market and the churches. The most interesting sight is the basilica of the Archangelos, one of the most important architectural monuments of Molyvos built in 1795 and Agios Panteleimon which was built in 1844. Other attractions include the Municipal Library which is housed in the Town Hall.
Molyvos village is a must place to visit. Another interesting area to visit is Eftalou which is a coastal area located 4 km northeast of the village and has thermal springs famous for their healing properties, and many beautiful beaches.
