Anemotia

;

Description

Anemotia is located in the northwestern part of the island at a distance of 55 km from the town of Mytilene. The name ‘Anemotia’ was given  due to the strong winds which were blowing in the area. The exact translation of ‘Anemotia’ is ‘the winds’ ears’. The village, like many other villages of Lesvos too, is the creation of settlements brought together in one place to protect the natives from pirates. The settlements were: ‘Fkolia’, ‘Xenotafia’, ‘Loimochori’ and the ‘St. George’ Cathedral.  Today you can see the remains of these settlements.

Anemotia is a traditional village with stone houses, adorned with pediments covered with Byzantine tiles in flower-filled courtyards. Sights of the village entail the Museum, the manor house Emilia, the old primary school (built in 1898), the stone fountain "Kalokosta" from 1729, the old Turkish bath and a small stone bridge. Also, the village has numerous churches which are open for visitors.
