Description

Afalonas is located 7 km north of Mytilene. The name comes from the merge of two words translated as ‘upper threshing area’ which described the latter round threshing area at the top of the hill.

It is one of the oldest villages of the island and its history begun a long way back in ancient Greece. Sights of the village include the basilica church which is dedicated to Virgin Mary and the church of the ‘Holy Trinity’, built at the foothills of the ‘Holy Trinity’ mountain. It is believed that a monastery existed on the top of this mountain in ancient Greece. It is also worth visiting ‘Tsamia’.

On ‘Holy Spirit’ bank holiday a feast is organized at the ‘Sword Position’ and ‘Ovrigio’ burning is held. ‘Ovrigio’ is a custom preserved from the Turkish occupation.
