The Acropolis (Vigla) of Eressos

;

Description

Vigla, the acropolis of ancient Eressos is located on a rocky hill, in short distance from the beach and south of the present village of Skala Eressos.

A Byzantine castle- whose existence is attested from the early 14th century- was built on the ruins of the ancient acropolis.

As Eressos was a naval town and important commercial center since the 6th century. B.C., the role of the acropolis was to protect the area from “unwanted visitors”.

The castle has undergone alterations and additions, first by the Byzantines and then by the Gatelouzi rulers of the island.

Nowadays, only a few ruins of the Byzantine castle have been preserved, including a circular and a rectangular tower and a water tank.
