Description

Monastery of the Archangels Taxiarches of Eressos is better known as Pithari (jar in greek) Monastery, due to the area’s geomorphic characteristics, and dates back to the 16th century.

In 1931, Pithari Monastery merged with the Monastery of Ypsilou. Seven years later, it started operating as an ecclesiastical penitentiary, but was closed down during the german occupation of the island.

In recent years, the monastery operates again with a small brotherhood of monks. Throughout this period, the renovation works of the buildings and premises of the monastery continue relentlessly, with absolute respect to its original characteristics.
