Description

The old Archaeological Museum of Mytilene is housed in an impressive mansion, built in 1912 and belonged to the family of Achilleas Vournazos.
The main exhibition unfolds the history of Lesvos from the last Neolithic Age to the late Roman period.

The first floor of the building hosts exhibits of the Final Neolithic Age and the Bronze Age, exposed in three rooms and the hallway.

On the second floor, visitors may view objects- gold coins, jewelry, works of pottery, metalworks and glass industry works, figurines, sacrificial utensils, tombstones- dating from the 10th century BC to 4th century AD, chronologically classified. There is also an exhibition of the unique Aeolian capitals from Klopedi’ s ancient temples, as well as sculptures and inscriptions which date from the Archaic period to the Roman one.

Finally, heavy sculptures and architectural parts of significant Hellenistic and Roman Mytilene buildings are placed in the museum courtyard.
