Description

This traditional white-stone built village is located in the mountainous area of Larnaca and its architecture is similar to the ones of the neighboring villages of Kato Drys and Lefkara. The community is characterized by the few residents' hospitality and kindness. There are various stories for the naming of the village, however the most popular ones are that it got the name by a local commander or by a plant from river Nile exported to the island.

Despite the village's small size and number in residents, Vavla has a long history concerning the help it offered to the First and Second World War, the Balkan Wars and the important aid and support to the fight for freedom and independence of Cyprus. The village hosts the churches of Ayios Georgios, the main church of the community, the church of Archaggelos Michael at the entrance of the village and the church of Panayia tis Agapis. Panayia tis Agapis is a small church that is one of a kind in Cyprus and it is believed that it can provide eternal love. Also, in the community visitors can find Ayios Minas Monastery which is one of the most known monasteries in Cyprus.

An effort to maintain the character and the history of the village has concluded in renovating the old traditional well which during the years 1917-1925 was the main source for drinking water of the community. This place of interest has been declared as a World Heritage Monument. The village also has a nature path that explores the fauna and flora of the area and of is course a unique exercise in nature.
