Description

Vavatsinia is a village of Larnaca. Its population is approximately 80 people. It is indeed a very small village but with a unique beauty. The foundation of the village dates back to the Arabic invasions, where the citizens of the seaside areas were moving up to the mountains with their animals in order to save their lives. The village is said to be named after the Mouria (Berry tree) that can still be found inside the river of the village.

Along with the first citizens of the village, farmers of the closes villages of Panayia, Ayios Nicolaos and Ayia Marina, also moved to the village. A lot of hikers in the area, mainly coming from the villages of Ayioi Vavatsinias, Odou, Oras, Lefkara and Lythrodontas, used to stop in the village of Vavatsinia since its fresh water fountain was a meeting point.
The village was present in some major historical events of the last centuries. For example, Kyriakos Christou, a young villager of the Vavatsinia participated in the Greek Liberation war of 1821. Same as Nikos Patsalos, who participated in the Cypriot Liberation war of 1955-1959 and finally Alexandros Papachristoforou whose life is still missing after the big war against Turks in 1974.

In the village, one can find two churches and three chapels. The churches are dedicated to Ayios Georgios and Panayia Eleousa whilst the chapels to the memory of Panayia Koumniou and Sotiros. Furthermore, the village has a community park and square, which are located in the river. It also has a wonderful nature trail, "the Almond trail". There is also a zivania distillery in the village of Vavatsinia, a beautiful primary school, a camping site, a traditional creamery and some cozy restaurants for you to enjoy some local goodies.
