Description

Lefkara, is a picturesque village of Larnaca district, famous for its local lace known as a "Lefkaritika" and for its silverware. It is situated on the southern slopes of Troodos Mountains and is also accessible through the Limassol-Nicosia highway. The name of the village derives from the words "lefka" (meaning white) and "ori" (which means mountains/hills).

The village is divided into Pano Lefkara and Kato Lefkara (upper and lower part of Lefkara) and has around 1.000 inhabitants. Visitors should take the chance to walk through the cobbled streets of the village, where the architecture is at least unique. In Lefkara village you can visit the museums of lace and silverware. A religious fair takes place on the 13th to 14th September, in celebration of the Exaltation of Holy Cross. Leonardo Da Vinci visited the village and bought an altar cloth, which he donated to the Milan cathedral. In Kato Lefkara, the church of Archangelos Michael is a single aisled domed type with wall paintings of the 12th century.

When arriving at Lefkara, visitors should drop by the center of the village, where local citizens sit outside their restaurants and traditional shop. There is a great possibility that you might come across some older women who sit in the village streets working on their fine embroidery.
