Description

Description: Located between Pigadia and Volada, the mountainous village of Aperi cannot be seen from the seaside as the islanders built their houses between the green hillsides, in order to be protected from the pirates. Larger and well maintained houses compared to other villages, Aperi is perceived as the richer village of the island, mainly because most of the villagers have immigrated to the United states in the past but they never forget their homeland.

It served as the capital of the island from 1700 until 1892, when the capital moved to Pigadia. It is the seat of the Archbishop of the Greek orthodox church of Karpathos and Kasos islands. Here you will find the church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and the high school which serves the children of the whole island. Walk in the street and paths, where you can find coffee shops, some restaurants and a pharmacy. Visit the spring underneath the bridge and moreover have a look at the church of Virgin Mary. Towards the road to Ahata beach you can see the stadium of Karpathos island. Drivers be careful as the central street is very narrow, so if you have other destination, use the road around the village.
