Mantamados

Description

Located 37 km from the town of Mytilene, at an altitude of 150 meters. It takes its name from the Turkish word "Mantas" meaning ox.

Mantamados has a brilliant intellectual tradition with a rich repertoire of songs. Sights of the village is the Monastery of the Archangels,  the St. Basil church in the center of the village which dates from 1750. Close to the village is the beautiful Byzantine church of St. Stephen which attracts many pilgrims.

Also in the area there are groups of summer houses and pottery workshops. The villagers are mainly engaged in farming and the cultivation of olives. Formerly occupied with pottery and the famous "Mantamadiotika" water jugs.

Today Mantamados has high quality dairy products, especially  "Mantamados yogurt" made with the old traditional way.  

Near the village are many coastal locations such as St. Stephen with its marvelous seaside, Lagada area with its beautiful sandy beach, Kalostasi with crystal clear sea and the picturesque Cape Palios with few houses of fishermen.
