Taxiarches (Kagiani)

;

Description

Taxiarches is located just 6.5km south of Mytilene. It is a rural village, built on the slope of ‘Amali’, at an altitude of 175m. It takes its name from the homonymous church of ‘Taxiarchis’. Previously it was called ‘Kagiani’ from the Turkish word ‘Kaya’ which means rock.

The village has a spectacular view of the city of Mytilene and of the southern suburbs. A sight of the village worth viewing is the imposing church of the Archangels which is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture built in 1958. Also, the cave of St. Bartholomeo is of great archeological interest.
