The Basilica of Agios Andreas

Description

The Basilica of St. Andrew (Agios Andreas) was an Early Christian Aisled Basilica (one of the largest in Lesvos), discovered in excavations carried out by monks of the “Pithari” monastery in 1884 and 1885. Today, only ruins of the majestic church have survived.

Probably, it was originally dedicated to the apostle Andrew or St. John Prodromos. The change of the Basilica’s name dates back to 740 AD, as the archbishop of Crete, Saint Andrew, was buried there.
