The Castle Of Sigri

;

Description

Sigri Castle is located at the homonymous village, on the cape of the western side of the island.

Thanks to its geographical position, Sigri was an important station in the transit trade. Large quantities of acorns (the principal product of western Lesvos in the 18th and 19th c.) were exported from there to the markets of England and Italy.

The Sigri Castle was built in 1757 by the Ottoman Admiral Suleiman Pasha, in order to protect the area from pirates’ invasions and ensure the safe transportation of goods. It was a small, square fortress with four square towers at its corners and a balcony with perforated floor above its main gate (the guards could pour boiling oil on the enemies). The security provided led to the residential development of the village.

Today, it maintains its original characteristics and is very well preserved.
