The Ancient Sanctuary of Messon

;

Description

The Archaelogical site of Messon is one of the most significant monuments in Lesvos, located in the Agia Paraskevi suburbs, in the center of Lesvos (the word “messon” means “middle”). It used to be an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Zeus.

The temple collapsed in the beginning of 4th century AD and its architectural features were completely destroyed.

Important repairs took place the following years, while a basilica was built on the top of the temple in early Christian era, that was later replaced by the post-Byzantine church of Taxiarhis.

The entrance is free of charge
