Description

One of the natural attractions of the island worth seeing, is Poseidon's cave. The cave is located at Mili area of Karpathos town, about 3 km from the center. The findings, like graves and shrine, appear that the cave was used in ancient times as a place of sacrifices or temple. The carved rock shrine was dedicated to the god of sea, Poseidon or the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Speculations on Aphrodite (Venus) are based on that archaeologists have found statues of the goddess in the surrounding area. When you visit, look for the shell fossils around on the cave, sign that sometime there used to be sea water.
